Developmental Skills and Quality Time in the Kitchen

Time spent together with your child helps them achieve developmental skills and gain self-confidence. Cooking together offers the ideal opportunity to enjoy quality time with your child.

Building Skills and Baking

Cooking can help your child build language skills, critical thinking skills, motor skills and math skills. Recipes are a sequence of steps and require an understanding of measurements, products, chemistry and time. Cooking and baking require lifting, sifting, pouring, whisking, beating and stirring. Raw ingredients combine in a specific order and way to produce a finished product. Heat may be necessary to alter the ingredients. Cooking is both art and science.

The Four P's of Pastry and Baking

Baking requires planning, preparing, processing and perfecting. The planning stage includes decision-making and organizational skills. Ask your child to decide what you are going to make. Once they have selected what they want to make, you need to find a recipe. Your child will need to determine if you have the ingredients on hand, or if you need to buy them. The next step is preparation. This requires gathering all the ingredients that are needed as well as all the cooking tools. Processing is all about reading and understanding what needs to be done to complete the recipe. And finally, perfecting is the act of putting all the parts together and making the recipe. These steps are new and interesting to a young child. They're also the same steps that are needed to be successful with school assignments and other tasks. Think of writing a paper. Your child needs to decide on a topic, research and gather related information, read and process the information, and produce the content.
