Encourage Summer Reading

If you’re looking for ways to prevent the summer slide from affecting your child, encourage them to do plenty of reading over summer break. Not only will this help them increase their reading level, it can also turn into a regular habit. Below are some easy ways to get your child reading this summer.

Visit Your Local Library

Make trips to your local library a weekly thing so that your child can always have something to read. Let your child pick the books he/she wants to read so that reading time is fun and exciting for him/her. You may even find that your local library hosts a summer reading program. If this is the case, encourage your child to sign up for a summer full of reading.

Make Family Reading Time

If your child just can’t seem to find the time to read, make family reading time a thing in your home. Choose a time of day when everyone can get together and read. You don’t have to read out loud or even the same book, but having everyone in one space reading quietly every day for at least 20 minutes is a great way to turn daily reading into a habit.

Start a Book Series

Get your child hooked on a book series this summer. Have them pick out the first book in a series they’re interested in and you can be sure they’ll keep reading through the summer. Once they’re getting close to finishing a book, make sure they have the next one in the series ready to go. You can even surprise them by giving them the next book in the series as a gift.
